Our Journey
Terry Prosser was appointed a member of AAT and ACCA in 1997 and 1999 and has since been made a fellow member of both professional bodies.
He started out in the accountancy profession at the age of sixteen by taking a random YTS placement with a local firm of accountants on Canvey Island.
Against the advice of his parents who thought YTS was slave labour, after the initial probation period Terry started studying AAT at a local college and found a career that was enjoyable and rewarding.
After completing the first year of AAT and getting a taste for the profession, Terry worked for a few London firms based in the Holborn area (including Baker Tilly, a top 20 firm of accountants) while continuing his studies with AAT then ACCA. All exams were passed and throughout his journey he worked in various roles to obtain a rounded experience base of small businesses.
When we asked Terry what was the most important lesson he learnt whilst training, he said, “Providing the relevant information to your client is key, there’s little point in producing a 20 page set of accounts if all your client is interested in is their cash-flow. It’s very important to tailor your reports according to what your client needs.”
At Terry Prosser Accounting Solutions Limited we don’t waste time preparing standard reports to justify our fees, we provide reports to clients tailored according to what they require. Many accountants get excited about “Added value services” so send out random reports together with a bible of information so that the client will feel that they’ve received good value for money.
I don’t believe this should be the case as many clients wonder how much they would have saved on their fees if their accountants hadn’t wasted a couple of hours printing these unnecessary reports.
In September 2002 Terry Prosser Accounting Solutions Limited was formed – starting out with a small portfolio of clients in the property industry. Business and Personal Tax Return Preparation
Tax rules change so often, it’s hard to keep up, especially in this difficult economic climate making it even more important to plan effectively. We have years of experience preparing individual, corporate, partnership and overseas landlord tax returns.
As they say, tax isn’t supposed to be taxing, unfortunately, you may find that without good advice you could be paying too much!
We file our corporate, individual and partnership tax returns online and are able to file the returns right up to the last minute as we receive confirmations online.
Our software also allows us to view clients tax file held at HMRC which allows us to request a refund should there be an overpayment on the account. Often a repayment sits on a HMRC account for months and the tax man may not even tell you about it. This system is crucial so that we can request refunds for our clients quickly.
Value Added Tax (VAT)
Del boy and Rodney may not have worried about VAT but there is a good chance that you do! VAT is an extremely complex piece of tax legislation and it quite often baffles the most intelligent business owners.
What records should you keep? What rate should you be charging? What rate should you be claiming? Are you partially exempt?
These questions are very important to property developers, especially those that work with listed buildings as the rules are very specific.
We can take the headache out of your vat returns by preparing them for you. We do all our VAT returns online which means you have until the last day of the month to submit your return and you don’t need to pay your VAT until the 12th of the following month if you pay by direct debit. The introduction of Making Tax Digital has been difficult but we deal with all aspects of compliance so our clients do not have the headache.
Book Keeping & Ledger Maintenance
Many of our clients use our full book keeping service. This works especially well for property developers and landlord companies, as we demand the rents due from the tenants, we pay service charges, operating costs, chase unpaid rents and settle supplier bills and utilities as they become due. We keep our clients informed by sending tailored regular reports and have regular meetings. We keep in contact by e-mail and telephone so our clients feel like we are an integral part of the organisation, not the accountant!
We have invested heavily in equipment, so we are able to send pdf’s of all sales and purchase invoices which means we are able to provide a copy invoice to clients at the touch of a button.
We use internet banking on a daily basis and are familiar with the systems available from Barclays, LloydsTSB, Natwest, Bank of Scotland and HSBC. Metro bank have a brilliant internet banking app.
Annual statutory accounts preparation
We have experience of company reporting and group accounts and are happy to assist our clients in fulfilling their statutory obligation as directors to prepare the annual report and accounts.
We have a very good relationship with a team of auditors and if your company requires an audit due to its size or banking facilities, we can prepare your accounts, prepare a file for the auditors so the audit fees are kept to a minimum.
We liaise with the auditors on your behalf and answer most questions taking the headache away from the directors at the end of each year.
